This collection covers the onsite and offsite correspondence from the Assistant Laboratory Director (ALD) for Tracking and Data Acquisition (TDA) William Bayley and his successor Peter Lyman during the 1970s. It includes management meetings, excerpts related to TDA from annual reports, and budgets for Spain and Australia, as well as projects such as the Orbiting Deep Space Relay Station (ODSRS), Large Advanced Antenna Station (LAAS), and the Very Large Array (VLA).

William H. Bayley came to JPL in 1960 as Deputy Chief or the Telecommunications Division. In 1963 he was named General Manager of the Deep Space Network (DSN) and in November of 1967 he was appointed Assistant Laboratory Director (ALD) for Tracking and Data Acquisition. He was responsible for international site selection and construction of facilities as the DSN grew from three stations to eleven. In 1980 he retired and Dr. Peter T. Lyman was appointed ALD. Peter Tompkins Lyman was born on February 9, 1930 in Berkeley, California. After serving seven years in the Merchant Marine, Lyman earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, a master of engineering in naval architecture, and in 1963 a doctorate in mechanical engineering, all from the University of California at Berkeley. Lyman joined JPL in 1963, and worked for fifteen years on Mars missions, including Mariner 1964, Mariner 1969, and Viking. He served as Cog...
